First Resident!
This week we welcomed our first resident!
Heini King graduated last year with an MA in Fine Art from Central St Martins. Her work melds the boundaries between reality and fiction and takes its form in performance, painting and mixed-media.
National Lockdown necessitated this becoming a residency over distance - quite the opposite of what we had originally hoped for - but it was both productive and valuable. In particular we now aimed to investigate how Instagram might be used as a tool of communication (rather than just self promotion). Sure it would be instantly available to a wider audience but we could pretend this was just us chatting...
I sent Heini an image each morning, imagining her waking up here at Aplpip and greeting the day, giving her a glimpse of the place and offering a scrap of the material, elemental, January seep that we are in at the moment; to which she would respond with drawings and work in her studio. The conversation was weird and abstract while we imagined sharing food, movies and space. The script dialogue (under the instagram posts from 11-17 Jan 2021) and the subsequent interview we gave one another on IGTV live, flesh out this week and give a little more context (you can find it here).
Thank you Heini for a valuable week of learning and progressing the concept of what a residency is. I can’t wait for a time when you can visit in person and we can delve into this together.
